Istria – 3-day cycling and camping tour

Istria, one of the most beautiful parts of Croatia, is famous for its rich history, stunning nature, and delicious food.

But what’s better than exploring this magical region than on two wheels? A cycling adventure through Istria provides a unique opportunity to connect with nature, explore picturesque towns, and enjoy local specialties. Before setting off, it’s important to prepare properly. First, choose your camper according to your needs — our Dacia Overland camper with a bike rack is ideal for such trips, offering both comfort and mobility. We recommend bringing basic items such as cycling gear, repair tools, clothing for various weather conditions, and, of course, enough food and drinks.

In this blog, we will reveal a 3-day cycling route, including routes from Pazin through Gračišće, Brtonigla, then from Motovun to Grožnjan, returning along the historic “Parenzana,” and visiting the Lim Channel with a stop at the Tractor Story Museum — a fantastic experience for nature and cycling enthusiasts. This route offers beautiful landscapes, charming towns, and historic landmarks. Our Overland Dacia camper combined with cycling is a great way to explore nature and enjoy an adventurous journey. The advantages of this type of travel include:

Independence: It allows you to travel and camp in nature without relying on hotels or other types of accommodation.
Access to remote locations: You can explore hard-to-reach places far from main tourist routes.
Comfort: Compared to classic camping, our Overland Dacia camper offers greater comfort and protection from the weather, and compared to regular campers, it provides much more flexibility and accessibility to harder-to-reach spots.

The equipment in the camper is sufficient for self-sufficiency for several days. On this trip, the fully equipped kitchen with a gas grill and refrigerator, as well as an excellent power pack, proved invaluable, allowing three days of continuous operation of the fridge, charging phones and laptops, without fear of running out of electricity.

Day 1: Pazin – Gračišće – Pićan – Podpićan – Pazin

A warm-up route of about 15 km. Start your ride in Pazin, known for its medieval castle and the Pazin Abyss. Enjoy the views of the surrounding hills.

Gračišće: After Pazin, head to Gračišće. This small town is known for its narrow picturesque streets and traditional Istrian architecture — an ideal spot for a short break. Don’t miss tasting local specialties at the tavern “Marino” in the medieval town square, while enjoying stunning views of surrounding vineyards and nature.

Pićan and Podpićan: Next hill, a new undiscovered beauty. Pićan sits atop a hill above Raša. Its ruins of medieval churches and houses tell the story of this region’s rich history. Returning to Pazin, we took a tougher uphill route, stopping at Sopot waterfall beneath Pićan, and then slowly back to Pazin. As dusk fell, thanks to our versatile camper, we found a beautiful meadow above Lake Butoniga, overlooking the charming village of “Grdoselo.”

Day 2: Motovun – Gračišće – Parenzana – Motovun

A more challenging route of about 38 km. After breakfast, morning coffee, and exploring Lake Butoniga, we headed with our camper to Motovun — one of Istria’s most famous towns. This medieval hilltop town offers spectacular views of the Mirna River valley. Take a stroll along the city walls and enjoy a glass of local Malvazija wine in the beautiful medieval town square.

After visiting Motovun, we hopped on our bikes and headed to Grožnjan. After about an hour and a half of cycling, Grožnjan appeared on the hill in the distance. Considering the steep 6–7 km climb ahead, we stopped for lunch at the friendly tavern Ponte Porton. Persuaded by the charming owner, we tried “pljukanci” with Boškarin sauce (local beef), paired with another glass of Malvazija. After the tough climb to Grožnjan, we entered the town, which in my opinion deserves the title “the most beautiful place on the entire Istrian peninsula.”

Grožnjan: The town of artists. Here you can visit galleries and enjoy charming streets full of workshops. A place where history intertwines with simple stone architecture, picturesque flower-filled streets, and spectacular views in all directions. After a relaxing coffee, the real cycling treat awaited us — Parenzana: this former railway line turned into a cycling route stretches from Poreč to Trieste. About 123 km long, it offers amazing views of the sea, vineyards, and olive groves, and is suitable for all levels of cyclists. The section from Grožnjan to Livade (Motovun), 21 km long, is the most attractive part of the entire Parenzana, with six tunnels, four viaducts, several bridges, and breathtaking viewpoints. After descending along Parenzana, we returned to our camper and decided to find a campsite, to get a little taste of civilization. We stayed at a campsite in Vrsar, and after a good barbecue and the obligatory glass of Malvazija, we comfortably settled into the rooftop tent of our versatile Dacia camper.

Day 3: Vrsar – Lim Channel – Vrsar + visit to Baredine Cave and Tractor Story Museum

After riding over 50 km, we didn’t want to push too hard on the last day. From the endless cycling route options on www.Istra-trails
, we chose a circular route around Lim Channel.

Lim Channel: A bay on the western coast of Istria between Vrsar and Rovinj. Part of the Lim Fjord, it formed as a ria (submerged river estuary) of the Pazinčica River, which today disappears into the Pazin Abyss near Pazin, and in the past flowed into the Lim Bay. The Lim Channel may be better known as the backdrop of the Norwegian fjord in the film Vikings, starring Kirk Douglas and Tony Curtis. Cycling along the Lim Channel, be sure to stop at Pirate Bar, built in a real cave with a view of the beautiful blue sea. Legend has it that the pirate Morgan found refuge in this cave and hid his enormous stolen treasure somewhere nearby — and if you have time, the treasure hunt is supposedly still ongoing.

Returning to Vrsar on the way home, I was intrigued by the Tractor Story exhibition at Baredine Cave. A very interesting exhibition, created through the dedication of individuals to showcase the labor of farmers through centuries in Istria. From the earliest agricultural machines that made work easier, the exhibition guides you through the evolution of harvesting, tractors, and the history of grape processing and farmers’ lives. A unique museum where you can see Porsche, Ferrari, and Lamborghini — in a slightly different, tractor-style version. The permanent exhibition can be combined with a visit to Baredine Cave.

… And as they say, all good things must come to an end, so our journey concluded.

Cycling through Istria with our camper offers a unique opportunity to explore this beautiful region actively.

The combination of nature, culture, and gastronomy makes this experience unforgettable. Whether you’re an experienced cyclist or a beginner, Istria has something for everyone. So pack your things, rent our camper, take a bike (or rent one from us), and embark on an adventure that will inspire you with every pedal stroke!
